In one week we will be lifting off and headed to Cuba for a two week vacation. We’ve always wanted to go and experience the island; soaking up the sun and appreciating how different it is from typical North American life, despite being so close.
While we’ve always wanted to go, this trip came about as good friends of ours are getting married in Varadero. Like us, they are world travellers, and we were fortunate to meet up with them on a trip to Spain in 2011. Their wedding will be at a resort in Varadero, but Ewan and I knew we wanted to see and experience more than just the touristy resort area. So, we’ve planned for our first week in Cuba to tour around and appreciate the culture.
Our plan is stay at Casa Particulars, essentially the equivalent of a bed and breakfast where you will get a private room within a Cuban home. These are an affordable means of accommodation in Cuba, and from our friends who have backpacked through Cuba, it is a great way to learn more about Cuba and get to know the locals.
We plan to spend a couple of days in Matanzas and the remainder in Havana, with the possibility of doing a day trip. At this point our planning has been relaxed. For most trips we have a strict itinerary and to-do list of must-see and do-not-miss-this items. Of course we do have a handful of attractions we really want to see, but we also plan to go with the flow, see where the wind takes us. I’m ecstatic and really can’t wait to fly away and enjoy all the Cuba has to offer.
